THE AFRICAN IN ME
Logline
Raised in a predominantly white Dutch town, Victoria grew up trying to distance herself from her African heritage. Now, at thirty, she embarks on a journey to Uganda and Nigeria to reconnect with her roots. Accompanied by a Dutch-French filmmaker whose own fascination with Africa raises unexpected questions, the journey becomes a dialogue about identity, belonging and cultural perception.
Synopsis
In a divided Netherlands, we set out on a personal and cinematic journey that takes us from the familiar to the unknown. Through conversations, encounters and contrasting perspectives, the film explores what it means to belong to more than one culture.
From the expectations of Africa in Europe, to the reality on the ground in Uganda and Nigeria, and finally back to the Netherlands, we confront stereotypes, challenge assumptions and search for nuance.
Director's Approach
Through intimate conversations, observational filmmaking and contrasting perspectives, I explore the complexities of identity, cultural perception and belonging.
This is a personal story, but also a universal one about the search for home in a globalised world.
Seeking Production Partners
The project is currently in development. I am looking for a creative production partner to further develop the documentary, explore financing opportunities and bring the project to an international audience.
